When a home is expanded with a new extension, the ambition is often to create a space that feels like a natural continuation of the existing building while also adding something new: more space, more daylight, improved functionality, and a stronger architectural coherence. In this project, designed by Sølvsten Arkitektur, this balance has been achieved with great precision and the choice of acoustic ceiling plays a central role.
The extension is designed as a harmonious continuation of the original house, where a subtle shift in floor level creates a refined transition between old and new. This small step generates a generous ceiling height in the new kitchen-living space, increasing both the spatial volume and the sense of lightness and movement. The large glazed openings draw daylight deeply into the room and further into the rest of the home, which makes the acoustic environment an essential part of the overall experience.

A kitchen-living area with a high ceiling, hard surfaces, and expansive windows naturally places high demands on the sound environment. At the same time, the acoustic solution must not disrupt the architectural vision. To meet these requirements, the extension has been completed using a combination of Hz Plus gypsum acoustic panels and our finest Hz Acoustic Plaster 03.
The Hz Plus acoustic panels ensure effective sound absorption throughout the space, including areas with high activity levels, hard materials, and strong sound reflections. On top of the panels, Hz Acoustic Plaster 03 provides a completely smooth, uniform, and elegant ceiling surface without visible joints. The result is a calm, cohesive expression that supports the architecture while maintaining excellent acoustic comfort.
Together, the system creates an acoustic ceiling that enhances both the aesthetics of the room and the everyday experience – even when the kitchen is in use, the children are playing, and the family gathers in one shared space.
Sølvsten Arkitektur has worked with a refined, muted material palette in which each surface has its purpose and contributes to the tactile quality of the space. The rendered brickwork, the warm timber cladding, and the deep anodised overhang create a balanced exterior, beautifully connected to the garden through the large window sections. Inside, the same tactile approach continues.
Here, the soft, organic texture of microcement meets cooler steel details, while textile elements filter the light and add a discreet atmosphere. In this interplay between the raw and the refined, the acoustic ceiling becomes a natural part of the whole. The ceiling appears as a calm, cohesive surface that ties the space together and supports the subtle, modern atmosphere that defines the extension.
The extension appears as a quiet and carefully considered architectural addition that respects the existing home while adding a new layer of contemporary functionality. Acoustics are not an afterthought here, but an integrated part of the design.
By combining Hz Plus gypsum acoustic panels with Hz Acoustic Plaster 03, the family gains a smooth, seamless, and highly effective acoustic ceiling that makes the large kitchen-living area welcoming, comfortable to spend time in, and well suited for everyday life as well as social gatherings.
