The extension of ARoS Art Museum in Aarhus holds two very different ceilings: a curved passage towards The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell and the 1,000 m² underground Salling Gallery. The extension is designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, and the ceilings were carried out by our partner DK Akustik Vest.
Art Square – a curved passage towards the light
Art Square leads the public in towards James Turrell’s Skyspace. The ceiling is built in Hz Plus and finished with Hz Acoustic Plaster 03, which gives a smooth, seamless surface around the round rooflight.
Along the walls, precise edge trims follow the curve of the passage. The ceiling tames the sound, so you can move towards the work in calm – in keeping with the intention behind Turrell’s light installation.
The Salling Gallery – 1,000 m² underground
The underground gallery is a raw concrete room for contemporary art at scale. Here the ceiling is built in Hz Dual 011-R, an acoustic panel made from upcycled textile waste, and finished with Hz Acoustic Plaster 09, which also contains finely milled textile waste – including reused sheets from a local laundry.
The plaster is pigmented and matched to the character of the room, so the surface gains depth without losing its sound-absorbing function.
